An Extract From Episode 1
For what felt like an eternity everything was fine, and then the question just slid out of her.
‘Lady Loe, how old do you think I am today?’
‘I don’t know, Aku—as you very well aware.’ Lady Loe tried, and failed to sound sanguine about this question, which came up from time to time.
‘You must have some idea?’
‘No. Actually, I haven’t the faintest–.’
‘But, if you had to guess,’ Aku persisted.
This time Lady Loe baldly ignored the question.
Emerson looked over from Lady Loe to Aku.
Aku felt the blood pumping in her temples. She started peeling a fat strip of soft wax from the side of a candle and feeding it back the flame.
‘Stop that Aku.’
They chewed their food in silence for a while.
‘Why don’t you care how old I am, or who I am, or what I do, or what happens to me?’
Lady Loe turned to Tilmerson who was seated to her right, ‘Really I suggest, you make sure the child keeps her grubby little mits off the wine.’
Aku cut Lady Loe off, ‘well, who knows, maybe I am old enough now to be—to do another job. Maybe I should go to the Mainland, and get a job there. At least the Lucrans appreciate hard work.’
At this Lady Loe reeled back as if she had been slapped. She put down her knife and fork, slowly folded her napkin, and placed it neatly on the table beside her plate.
‘Aku, no one is keeping you here against your will. If that’s how you feel, maybe it is time you… Of course you can move on, by all means.’ Lady Loe’s voice was thin and breathless.
The brothers looked at one another.
Aku felt her head throbbing, her heart pounding and something heavy and painful stuck in her throat.
Lady Loe took a sip of her wine; the glass clinked against her teeth.
Outside, a sharp clap of thunder, broke the steady rhythm of the rain.
Aku sat with her head bent low, biting hard into her lower her lip, determined not to give Lady Loe the satisfaction of seeing the tears that were now threatening to flood.
